Requisition Number 17-2473 Post Date 11/21/2017 Title CRG - Naturalist City Scotts Valley State CA Description OVERVIEW: The farm and the Nature Center are the spaces at camp for campers to interact with farm animals, critters found in the creek, snakes from camp, and where they can learn how to be good stewards to all living creatures. The objective of the Naturalist is to create an engaging interactive space in the Nature Center and at the Farm that encourages creativity, investigation, & learning. Responsible for establishing & teaching campers about animal life, creation, and maintaining a safe, enjoyable, and educational program of nature & ecology. DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 1. Plan & implement an Elective class and Free Time activities that will enhance a camper’s understanding of the natural world, small farm animals (goats, chickens, &bunnies), gardening, and stewardship of the environment all as a tool for understanding of God as Creator. 2. Teach & orient staff on the rules & practices of the Nature Center & Farm 3. Assume responsibility for supervision and instruction for Salvation Army children’s programs, badges classes as assigned by the camp program schedule. 4. Create a “guided discovery” hike. Train staff to lead the hike and how to set up the trail. Be available to lead the hike as needed in support of the camp schedule. 5. Complete care of wild life caught on camp grounds, using such as opportunities for additional camper learning 6. Maintain day-to-day cleanliness and order of nature center, taking precautions to prevent campers from playing/working in or near dangerous areas. 7. Feed and care for all animals in the Nature Center & at the Farm 8. Provide a safe environment for the campers to experience the animals in the Nature Center 9. Maintain appropriate amounts of materials and equipment in nature areas, notifying the camp Program Director of necessary purchases or acquisitions 10. Write age appropriate lessons that encourage hands on learning 11. Preparing interesting, creative, and educational nature exhibits for campers. 12. Assist the Camp Director in any other duty as requested in order to maintain a consistently high level of efficiency in the operation of the camp. 13. Responsible for overseeing cleanliness and neatness of the animal farm area 14. Maintain good organization of supplies and feed while ensuring that materials are not wasted or misused. 15. Conduct inventory prior to opening of camp, determine equipment and supply needs 16. Conduct an inventory at the close of camp providing camp administration with a list of equipment and supplies to assist in projecting needs for following summer 17. Maintain a high standard of safety, developing rules for conduct in program area 18. Assist with the opening & closing day procedures as requested by Program or Camp Director 19. Plan for the care of the animals when camp is not in session 20. Assist the Program Director in preparing and actively participating in camp evening programs 21. Any other duties as assigned by your supervisor 22. Report any suspected child abuse issues to the Program Director and take necessary actions to report it properly 23. Report general property maintenance issues to Facilities Manager or Maintenance Crew Chief All staff may be called upon at any time to assist in the total operation of the camp. You are expected to join in all evening programs; absences are excused only through the Requirements QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be at least 18 years of age 2. Must possess interest, knowledge, and skills in the area of Natural Science and Ecology 3. Prefer educational background in the area of Natural Science and Ecology 4. Must be of good health, have the ability to take campers and staff on hikes throughout the area 5. Must possess good moral character PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. 2. Ability to grasp, push and pull objects and tools 3.
