Designed for college students who are pursuing an associates or bachelor's degree and have interest in information technology/network engineering, and experience in IP networking, using Cisco routers, switches and wireless access points. MidAmerican Energy Company's goal is to expose the intern to a variety of projects and activities that occur within the information technology/IP network environment. The intent is to give students an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned in college and demonstrate abilities in the work place. The position is temporary, nonexempt, part-time/hourly with total hours not to exceed 1,000 per calendar year. Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions) Assist other network engineers with lifecycle replacement of older Cisco switch and router equipment throughout our statewide network. Plan and coordinate wireless access point expansions. Make documentation and drawings of existing network structure and components. Ensure network device configurations are backed up and discoverable. Assist with efforts to resolve voice and data network problems and incidents through root cause analysis and potential network deficits. Identify and test current network conditions and provide recommendations to ensure that the voice and data network infrastructure is positioned to meet business requirements. Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. College student, junior or higher standing in a bachelor's degree program or final year of an associate’s degree in information technology or computer science. Strong understanding of IP ports, protocols, network traffic analysis, network security strategies and troubleshooting techniques. Hands on experience configuring and managing Cisco switches, routers and wireless access points is highly desired. Strong analytical and problem solving skills - ability to break a large system down into individual components and determine where a problem lies. Strong analysis and design skills involving the ability to gather data on systems issues, define alternative approaches, assess business impact, recommend cost effective solutions, and develop and implement those solutions. Experience with network discovery and documentation tools such as CiscoWorks and Microsoft Visio is a plus. Strong knowledge of current networking technologies, tools, applications and vendors. Experience configuring and maintaining these technologies in a large business environment is a plus. Public utility industry work experience is a plus. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently. Preferred schedule is at least four consecutive hours per day while going to school or other agreed upon schedule not to exceed 30 hours per week during the school year or summer.
