Legal Intern (Hollywood, Florida) NPCA’s Sun Coast office is seeking Legal Interns who will work with the Sun Coast Biscayne and Everglades Restoration Program Managers on a variety of National Park related legal research and upcoming campaigns. Specific project topic examples are listed below. This is a part-time internship (up to 25 hours per week) with a flexible schedule. This internship is eligible for course credits. Responsibilities: Everglades and Florida Power & Light NPCA has long been involved in efforts to protect Everglades National Park from the development of high-voltage powerlines by the for-profit utility Florida Power & Light within park boundaries, working with FPL, NPS, and other stakeholders toward the most beneficial outcome for ENP. This position will analyze the current status of the NPS agreement with FPL and the parallel legal proceedings to ensure compliance with implementation. Tasks may include but are not limited to: + Researching power plant siting regulations + Researching energy utility impacts on wildlife and wetland habitat + Working with agency staff for project updates + Drafting comment letters + Drafting blog or media content + Outreach to NPCA members and interested parties within the community Biscayne Fishery Management Plan NPCA is committed to enhancing the health of coral reef habitat and fish populations in our marine national parks and surrounding protected areas. Specifically, we are dedicated to the implementation of science-based fisheries management tools and a no-take marine reserve in Biscayne National Park. Tasks may include but are not limited to: + Analyze Biscayne National Park’s Fishery Management Plan (FMP) and research current fisheries science/consult with fisheries experts to determine next steps for FMP implementation + Research potential to incorporate a boater education program in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary draft management plan + Work with agency staff to obtain relevant updates + Participate in implementation of advocacy campaign to advance FMP implementation write comment letters and media content + Coordinate efforts with community partners/organizations Biscayne and Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant poses a myriad of threats to Biscayne National Park and the surrounding environment, both from plans to expand the plant and current contamination emanating from Turkey Point’s cooling canal system. Tasks may include but are not limited to: + Analyze remediation and monitoring plans and legal requirements for cooling canal system contamination with a specific focus on how they address contamination in Biscayne National Park + Monitor permitting process for the expansion plan + Work with agency staff to obtain relevant updates + Write comment letters and media content + Coordinate efforts with community partners/organizations Qualifications/Requirements (i.e., education, technical skills): + Current or recently graduated law student preferred (with or without bar test completion) + Strong writing and editing skills + Perform thorough research on various items to support campaigns + Participate in team, department, and other meetings to learn more about NPCA programs/campaigns and help brainstorm. + Not afraid of speaking up to try something new At the end of this internship Legal Interns will walk away with: + Policy positions on the aforementioned projects + Communication pieces including blogs, fact sheets, etc. + Contributing to the preservation and protection of America’s national parks.
